Dr. Sharon Gurm
Naturopathic Physician (Oncology)
Dr. Gurm is a Naturopathic Physician Board Certified in Naturopathic Oncology. As a visionary in the medical profession, she believes the advancement of healthcare requires an integration of both conventional medicine and evidence-informed naturopathic medicine, providing personalized care for her patients. A foundational component of this care model is to address both the disease itself, as well as the factors that contribute to health and disease - such as nutrition, diet, genetics, epi-genetics, lifestyle and other factors including the mind-body connection. Dr. Gurm is among leading physicians and policy influencers that believe this personalized and whole-person approach represents the modern evidence-informed healthcare model - effectively replacing the historic disease-and-symptom-focused standard of care.
Dr. Gurm’s academic journey began at the University of British Columbia, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Cell Biology & Genetics and was appointed to a 5-year clinical research position at the BC Cancer Agency, mentored by some of the top oncologists in the country. In 2005, Dr. Gurm received her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Following that, she completed a fellowship in Naturopathic Oncology to become a board-certified Naturopathic Oncologist. In 2007, she founded Port Moody Health - Integrative Medicine & Cancer Care – a multidisciplinary and collaborative healthcare centre.
As a leader in the profession, Dr. Gurm and her clinic have gained worldwide attention for their progressive and innovative model of care and cancer treatments – such as local regional hyperthermia and photodynamic therapy. Visitors from around the globe dealing with cancer and other chronic disease come to Port Moody Health to experience the exceptional and transformative care they provide.
Dr. Gurm has had the privilege of training with renowned physicians and brilliant researchers, both locally and abroad. She regularly attends cancer conferences and visits hospitals in Germany, to keep pace with current trends in oncology. Her vast network consists of the top medical providers around the world. She strongly believes that chronic conditions require collaborative care from a team of providers with a common goal to provide the best care for the patient.
Dr. Gurm is also a clinical instructor and curriculum coordinator of the oncology program at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, teaching medical students the foundations of oncology and evidence-based integrative oncology. In 2017, the clinic was approved as an official CNME-recognized site for post-graduate naturopathic oncology residency programs.
A frequent speaker at conferences, Dr. Gurm presents lectures on integrative oncology to medical professionals. In 2016, she became the first naturopathic physician invited to speak to the distinguished oncologists and care providers at the BC Children's Hospital Oncology Group and collaborates with the clinicians and families who wish to safely integrate complementary cancer therapies.
As a member of the UBC and U of T alumni for varsity athletics, Dr. Gurm continues to lead a very active lifestyle. She enjoys running, yoga, pilates, cross-training and hiking. On weekends, the amazing west coast landscape is often the playground of outdoor activities with her daughter and husband.
